To Read; an Assassinated reading list

  1. Assassination: Twenty Assassinations That Changed History by Lee Davis - Published in 1997, this book chronicles twenty of the most notorious assassinations that have occurred throughout history, as well as their impact. It includes Jean-Paul Marat, Grigorii Rasputin, Pancho Villa, Robert F. Kennedy, and Indira & Rajiv Gandhi, plus 15 others. While I have not personally read this book, a consumer review reports that it provides basic information about these assassinations.
  2. Cold Blooded Killings: Hits, Assassinations, and Near Misses That Shook the World by Charlotte Greig - Published in 2009, this book analyzes the factors leading up to and the impact of assassination attempts - both successful and not - throughout history, as well as drawing conclusions regarding similarities shared by many of these killings. Greig takes into account not only political assassinations, but also those of entertainment and cultural icons, such as the attempt on Andy Warhol's life by radical feminist Valerie Solanas.
  3. Shot, Stabbed, and Poisoned: The Story of Assassination Through the Ages by Jonathan J. Moore - Published in 2018, this book has served as my primary source of information and inspiration while creating this website. It chronicles the stories of various assassinations broken down into categories such as Mafia Hits, Near Misses, and Political Leaders, and is organized chronologically within each chapter. The format is easy to follow and contains many images, not to mention its fascinating subject material, making this a captivating read.
  4. 11/22/63 by Stephen King - While not an academic source, this novel is an imaginative take on the Kennedy assassination that begs the question: what would happen if Lee Harvey Oswald was stopped before he fired those fatal shots? The book goes into detail about Oswald's life and his plans to carry out the assassination, much of which is fictionalized despite having a base in historical fact. It is a lengthy read, but well worth the time and energy. There is a well-done TV adaptation of King's novel available for streaming on Hulu, that stars James Franco, which I also highly recommend.

To Listen; an Assassinated Playlist

  1. "Mister Garfield" by Johnny Cash from the 1972 album "America: A 200-Year Salute In Story & Song"- In which Johnny Cash provides a narrative account of the assassination of 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield in song
  2. Assassins - 1990 Original Cast Recording - This musical, written by John Weidman and composed by Stephen Sondheim, imagines a cast of American assassins (John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, Charles Guiteau, and others) at a carnival shooting gallery as they hope to shoot a president and solve their personal issues.
